The China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Geosciences Cooperation Research Center (also referred to as the “Center”) was established in 2014 and consists of eight member states. The office is located at the Xi’an Center of China Geological Survey (Xi’an). The Center is an open geoscience research organization and devotes to the cooperation and exchanges in the field of Geosciences with the relevant states of the SCO, promoting the mining economic development, sharing geology and mineral information and training personnel.
In recent years, the Center has embraced the frontiers of international geosicences research, focused on the major geosciences issues on basic geology, mineral resources, environment and disasters effects in Central Asia, West Asia and Central and Eastern Europe, and jointly carried out geological survey and research and achieved a series of results, which have provided important support for the economic development of the SCO member states.
On September 10-11, 2019, the Center that relied on the China Geological Survey of the Ministry of Natural Resources P. R. China and the Shaanxi Provincial People’s Government jointly organized the 2019 “‘Belt and Road’ Forum for International Geoscience Cooperation and Mining Investment and ‘Practice & Exchange Camp for Young Geologists from SCO Countries’”. The theme of the forum was “Promoting High-level Cooperation in Geosciences and Assisting High-quality Development of Mining”. More than 200 researchers and geologists from 23 countries including Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Niger, Angola, Ethiopia, Argentina, Morocco, and Nigeria, participated in the forum.
A total of 20 participants made speeches in the forum. Professor Jinrong Tang of Xi’an Center of China Geological Survey (China-SCO Geosciences Cooperation Research Center) introduced the Progress and Development Plan of China-SCO Geosciences Cooperation Research Center. Mr. Yasmin from Geological Survey of Pakistan introduced the Geoscience Cooperation between Geological Survey of Pakistan and China Geological Survey. Mr. Mingboev, Dr. Movlanov and Ms. Dulabova of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Geology and Mineral Resources respectively introduced the On the Ongoing Research Work in Uzbekistan and Possible Areas of Bilateral Cooperation, Investment Potential of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Status and Prospects of Regional Works of Uzbekistan. Mr. Alizoda from the Main Department of Geology under the Government of Repubilc of Tajikistan introduced the Geological Study of Tajikistan and Cooperation in the Feld of Geology. Mr. Kyryliuk of State Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine introduced the Improvement of Subsoil Use System in Ukraine: Reforms Path. Mr. Dönmez Cahit who came from General Dırectorate of Mıneral Research and Exploratıon of Turkey introduced An Overview to Mining sector of Turkey. Mr. Tumurbaatar of Mineral Resources and Petroleum Authrity of Mongolia introduced Mongolian Mining Sector Overview and Prospective. Mr. Iurciuc of Agency of Geology and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Moldova introduced Construction Materials as a Basis for the Development of Mining and Geological Industry of the Republic of Moldova. Professor Jingbin Wang from Sinotech Minerals Exploration CO., LDT. introduced HSE Management of Overseas Minerals Enterprise Project. Mr. Yongcai Wang of Jinchuan Group Co., Ltd. Introduced Jinchuan’s Overseas Resource Industry Layout. Mr. Kai Liu, China Huaye Group Company Limited, introduced Building A World-Class Underground Mine and Being A Benchmarking Enterprise On “Belt And Road”. Tibet Huayu Mining Mr. Xiyong Kang gave a speech on Huayu Mining Boosts China-Tajikistan Friendship and “Belt And Road” Initiative TALCO GOLD Win-win Cooperation. Mr. Mengfei Wang from China Aero Geophysical Survey and Remote Sensing Center for Nature Resources introduced Applications of Remote Sensing in Geological Survey. Mr. Bo Yang from Xi’an Center of China Geological Survey introduced the Construction Planning of SCO Geoscientific Big Data Platform. Professor Hongxin Zhang from Zhengzhou Institute of Multipurpose Utilization of Mineral Resources, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, introduced History, development and innovation of mineral processing in China. Professor Feng Xu from Silk Road College, China University of Geosciences introduced Current Training Status and Future Development of Overseas Geoscientific Talent. Dr. Liqiong Jia of Editorial Department of China Geology introduced the Profile of China Geology Journal and Orientations.
During the forum, the China Geological Survey transferred the data and atlas of the low-density geochemical survey conducted jointly by the two countries to the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Geology and Mineral Resources and Geological Survey of Pakistan respectively. The geological data can be widely used in geological science research, environmental monitoring, mineral exploration, agricultural planning and other fields.
In order to promote the construction of the Center and enhance international geoscience cooperation and mining investment, four suggestions were proposed: Firstly, fully displaying the role of the Center, such as continuously deepen bilateral and multilateral geoscience cooperation and exchange, and promote national geosciences innovation and development in the region; Secondly, promoting international mining investments and production capacity cooperation for sustainable economic development of countries along the Belt and Road; Thirdly, accelerate the sharing of national geological and mineral information in the region, timely release mining investment information; Finally, Wuhan Institute from China-SCO Geosciences Cooperation Research Center will supply the training of geoscientific talents to meet the needs of geoscientists all over the world for the Center.
